Yes, I said names, plural.
Today we went down to our local Social Security office and changed our names. I added Dave's last name as my middle name, and he added my former last name, which is now my second middle name, as his second middle name too. You follow? Ok.
We've been using these new names since we got married, but we hadn't actually officially changed them until today. We left for Amsterdam so soon after getting married that we didn't want to change things then and mess up our passports, visas, etc. We figured now though was as good of a time as any!
So, now we each have four names. That was our compromise. Name inflation, you think? Well, yes. But this way neither of us had to drop any of our given names, we each got to give each other a name to share, and we avoided the hyphen, which many people have strong feelings about. We're hoping that having two middle names doesn't cause a lot of grief. We'll keep you posted.
And yes, our kids will have two middle names (the second one being my previous last name) too. :)

i'm still confused. you added dave's last name as your MIDDLE name? i thought your last name was going to be your middle name. wtf is your name??!!
Very cool. My wife is Portuguese and they always add the wife's maiden name as one of the kids' names.
Crystal, you're not confused, you see our names written down all the time. You just read the post wrong and it confused you. You already know our names. :p
Glad you approve running42k! :) We are pleased with it as well.
Zoey has two middle names too! I really wanted to keep my maiden name alive for the next generation, but didn't want to give her the hyphenated name (I love my decision to hyphen, but it is definitely confusing and doesn't roll off the tongue!) Love your unique solution!
I love it. I decided to keep my former last name as my second middle name so I didn't lose my identity altogether but I got the added convenience of getting to use Paul's much easier to spell and pronounce last name on a day-to-day basis. I reckon it's a great compromise.
I am soooo impressed by how you two solved this conundrum. I swear I will be 80 years old and still bickering about this :P Glad you two are so consistently on the same page with such important issues!
